Hello, I use to work in the coal industry both underground and on the surface. I have seen first hand that these greedy companies pollute and damage the earth. Before entering the mining industry I grew sugar cane and cattle, and prior to that I completed a agricultural science degree, hence I know a little about agronomy and soil science. I have seen the rehabilitated land that open cut mining has reinstated and it is far from the condition of the natural land. The salts that are brought up to the surface will not allow the successful establishment of buffell grass and often it is Rhodes grass that is planted as it can take higher levels of sodium. The Rhodes grass is often very stunted and struggling in these areas. The underground mines have another set of environmental issues in their arsenal. I worked in a board and pillar mine where in each production panel, it was nothing to see machinery discharging 250 litres of hydraulic oil in a 12 hour shift. This mine had 4 panels operating 24-7. If you do the maths nearly 3/4 of mega litre of oil is discharge to the floor and mixed with the ground water. This ground water is pumped to the surface and is of high salinity and polluted with hydraulic oil. This was water is pumped directly into the Fitsroy river system and pollutes the ocean. What effect is the salinity having on the fresh water system for the environment and the fresh water users. How much damage is done to the commercial and recreational fishing industries? A farmer could not afford to run machinery with hydraulic oil leaks like those mentioned above, yet we often blamed for damaging the land. The BMA, rio tinto, glen ores, Anglo coals and other coal mining companies get off Scott free. Sure they have environmental policies and protocols in place, but more that often they ignored to gain production and profits.

Don’t vote forcthe parties that support coal seam gas mining and shale gas mining etc. Know who you are voting for extract their promise before the election and make them accountable. Australia is the driest continent in the world, we need to protect our water and soil. No CSG!! Care for Queensland’s future. Tourism, agriculture and clean energy will provide the jobs we want – or would you prefer the unsafe route of chemicals in your soil and our rivers alight with bubbling gas!!

its high time to stop digging holes and destroying the surrounding areas and waterways and use friendly alternatives .

Don’t sell out Queensland to the mining giants! This industry will not deliver jobs; it is the most highly mechanised of them all! Protect Queensland jobs in farming and tourism instead. And protect the Great Barrier Reef and Great Artesian Basin at the same time!

Denis Chapman I’ve signed your petition but I’m not sure why when I see most QLD farmers and farmers in general continue to vote for the National Party NLP who are your worst enemy as far as looking after your farming land goes, the majority of them are climate change deniers and CSG and coal is good for humanity proponents, when signing this petition I ask myself why bother because the blokes you’re trying to help are beating your head against a brick wall for helping them by their continued support of the National NLP Party.
